The night of Saturday, April 26th was a tragic night for the Vancouver filipino community. The lapu lapu festival is a festival created to celebrate a filipino national hero who fought against Spanish colonization. British Columbia is home to a significant Filipino community, with 172,915 people of Filipino origin living in British Columbia in 2021, about 3.46% of the population. The lapu lapu festival on Sunday was well attended and is high spirts. Nearing the end of the night, a black SUV drove 100km an hour into a crowd of people, killing 11 and leaving 20 others injured. The accused killer, Kai-ji Adam Lo, will make his next appearance in court Friday afternoon. Lo had previous encounters with the police for mental health issues, and a had called the police station the night before because he had thought someone was throwing things into the back of his SUV. VCH had confirmed that Lo was on an extended release from hospital at the time of the murders.

My initial reaction was to assume this was the fault of a drunk driver. To figure out he was completely sober was shocking, but Lo has mental health issues. His mental health issues absolutely does not justify and make right what took place, but is a clear telling of the way our city handles people with mental health issues. Lo had many previous encounters with police of mental health and was put into a hospital for a short time, but was eventually let go to wander free. Vancouver handles citizens mental health poorly, and you can tell by the number of homeless people who wander the streets. Instead of helping the homeless with rehab or safe housing, we instead give them more "safe" drugs, so they stay addicted. All of this poor treatment will bite backs, and this is how it did. This situation is horrible and should have never happened, but hopefully this is a wake up call for vancouver to start treating the mental health of their citizens more seriously.
